Children have the ability to absorb information and lessons through the use of rhymes and songs. Instead of simply telling children “no”, why not give them proverbs to live by to help them understand their actions better. “Actions speak louder than words”, “sharing is caring”, or “treat others the way you want to be treated” are ways to teach children benefits and consequences of their actions and the best part about it is that they will remember it through life. Not only will they remember it, but they will teach others. Back In my babysitting days I remember helping out birthday parties and overhearing the kids teaching each other new lessons in the form of proverbs and I couldn’t help but smile.
We don’t only have to teach children life lessons in proverbs and rhymes. Preschools now have “clean up” and “lunch time” songs for certain times of the day. After all, rhymes and songs brighten everyone’s day and what a better way to make a boring task fun than by singing!
